TUESDAY TOPICS: Ten things that make you happy.

Life. Love.Lauren

It's a new round of Tuesday Topics!

And we're starting off with ten things that make ME happy.

Okay, I'm not going to say coffee because, if you know me, you know it makes me happy. It allows me to be happy about other things. It's a life necessity. So I'm not counting it.

1. MY KIDDOS

I wanted to be a mom since I can remember wanting to be anything. They make me happy. Not always. But mostly.

Also, we're in a contest for the most "likes" on facebook. If we get the most, we win half off a photography session with our favorite photographer! So, if you're on facebook, please click the picture below and LIKE it!

2. MY HUSBAND

He's really sick right now. Big tree fall hard. But when he's not sick, he works really hard to make me happy. Not that I'm a hard person to please. (Seriously! I'm not!). He just tries. That alone makes me happy. And he made me this chair and painted it pink just for me for Mother's Day! I also got a cotton candy machine. Boom. Recipe for happiness.

3. BAKING

I love to bake and eat sweet things. The end.

4. TV

There is something about getting together as a family or just me and my husband to watch a show together. I just love it. It's something we all bond over and look forward to. Last year when we spent our anniversary in Vegas, we stayed in that Sunday night so we could watch Celebrity Apprentice.

5. BOOZE

Well, obviously.

The thing is, I don't even drink that much. I mean, I don't really ever drink on a week night. Mostly just weekends and not even every weekend. But when I do drink, it makes me happy and warm and jolly.

6. TRAVELLING

I love travelling. I love road trips, plane trips, visiting family, visiting old places, visiting new places.

7. BLOG READING, BLOG WRITING, BLOG DOING

I wish I had more time to read blogs because I could get lost in blog reading. Blog writing makes me happy. It's a release, a celebration, a therapy session, a rant, a kudos, and it's my own. I also love doing the DIY part of a blog.

8. HOLIDAYS

Holidays, any and all, make me happy. Any chance to celebrate and to break out the booze. See number 5.

9. SALES

What's better than finding something awesome on sale??? Nothing. That's what.

10. FAKE NAILS AND FAKE TANS

Shallow? Probably. But not having to take care of my nails because somebody else does makes me happy. And spray tans just make everything look better without all that cancer business.

What makes you happy?

Giving Money as a Gift: Dress Up a Money Gift with Candy

Giving Money as a Gift

Dress Up a Money Gift with Candy

(Because what else would I suggest?)

Graduation season is upon us!

And what do kids want for graduation? You guessed it! They want a nice card, a collared button up shirt, a book on etiquette, and maybe a cooking class.

JUST KIDDING!

They want cash!

And it isn't just for graduation. That's all my teenager wants every day, all day. Money. For Christmas, birthdays, Thursdays, it doesn't matter.

But there's a problem with this. I hate giving money as a gift. I hate giving gift cards, too. Unless I'm in a huge hurry or can't come up with something, I always try to get something more personal.

So here's the dilemma: My son wants cash gifts and I want to do something personal, creative, and decoratable. (I just made that a word.)

But then I came across this idea at Simply J Studio

Favorite candy & cash...fun gift for the hard-to-buy-for teen. Idea for that college bound kid!

I thought it was awesome! I could give cash, which is, let's face it, the perfect gift for young people, teenagers, and graduation, but I could also decorate it! And because I love candy and I love giving candy and sweets to others, how can I not do this forever and ever?!

You know what makes this type of gift idea even more awesome??? It involves food. Teenagers love money and food. This is what I know.

Last Christmas these were left under the tree for my teenager.

Super simple? Yep. But it's still better than just handing over the dough.

I gave this gift a to our friend's daughter for her fourteenth birthday.

It's so much more fun than just giving cash.

You can put your own twist on it. That's what makes it fun. Use someone's favorite candy bar, add labels and tags, ribbons and bows. Not sure my son appreciates that part but Mommy likes it!

That's What She Said: Farewell to The Office

That's What She Said

Farewell to The Office

Last night we said goodbye to The Office.

And I feel like I said goodbye to my 20's. Even though that happened two years ago.

I worked in office life for the greater part of my working history. Scratch that. I can't remember a job I've had that was not in an office setting in some way, shape, or form.

So when I caught my first glimpse of The Office back in 2004, I was immediately smitten. It had everything. The secret crush. The weird cat lady who hates everyone. The person who loves his crappy job a little too much. The inappropriate boss who strives to be "down with the people." I could go on.

I've known all these people. I swear, I've known every single one of them.

The thing is that in the real world, office life plays out a lot like the show. There is a ton of wasted time, joking around, gossiping, pranking, chatting, web surfing. My theory is that with technology advancements and work forces now knowing how to do things faster, there is more idle time. I don't think corporate culture has caught on to that. Otherwise there wouldn't be so much paperwork and long, unnecessary meetings to discuss more paperwork.

Listen to me. I talk like I still work outside of the home.

Not sure if any of you remember the movie, Office Space, but that was actually sampled and given as a lesson in a communications course in college.  Not kidding. Work Life Communication.

Back to the show...

I had a job once where I worked in an office (surprise) and a co-worker was promoted to our supervisor. Before supervisorhood, we would always catch up on the antics of Michael Scott. When he was in the supervisor position, no joke, this dude became Michael Scott - always striving to be the cool boss while simultaneously coming off as a big douche. He also expressed his wish that everyone go back to the "old days" where people over dressed for work and drank scotch and smoked cigars in their office at lunch. So I guess he wanted every day to be an episode of Mad Men.

I even got him a Michael Scott "World's Best Boss" coffee mug as a joke. He thought he was in on the joke. He wasn't.

Michael Scott

Long story short, he was fired because he had no idea what he was doing. He went down in a blaze of glory. And after the dust settled they found video games in his desk when he left.

Anyway, I think we can all agree that the Pam and Jim love story was the best ever. My favorite Office episode of all time was when Pam and Jim finally got married. Easily.

I think what The Office did was shine a light on just how life changing, hysterical, and pointless office culture can be.

It was the last line that got me: “There’s a lot of beauty in ordinary things. Isn’t that kind of the point?”

What a great show.

It's going to be hard to let it go.

[All together now!]

THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!

Braces Then, Invisalign Now

Braces Then, Invisalign Now

This is a sponsored post. However, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

When I was a kid we used to pretend to have braces.

We would unfold paper clips and hold them over our teeth and call them "braces." Yes, I'm admitting this.

Then all of my friends and classmates actually starting getting braces around middle school. There were rubber bands involved, a lot of metal, no gum, no candy, scraped lips, and wax. I heard about my friends' doctor visits and how painful it was. I heard a lot about the discomfort.

Luckily, I never needed braces. But my mom had them, a close friend, and now that I'm a mother, when it comes to teeth, I'm always worrying about whether my children will need braces. It always seemed to be such an investment of time, money, and comfort.

With that in mind, I attended my first official blogger event in Phoenix! I got to meet Dr. Thomas S. Shipley, DMD, MS, and he told us all about the world of Invisalign.

I've heard of Invisalign before but I didn't realize just how flexible they really are. In more ways than one! The idea is that they are virtually invisable. Get it? INVISA-lign. They are also molded to the teeth and gently straighten teeth over time.

The biggest difference between braces then and Invisalign now is there is no metal involved! No wires, no brackets. Invisalign is completely clear and can barely be seen.

See?

Can you see them?

Yeah, I know. It's a blurry picture because I just couldn't get a focus. But, it actually worked out because it's like in real life - you can barely see them on real teeth, too!

Invisalign was, at first, primarily used for adults. However, Invisalign just recently added Invisalign Teen for teenagers. As the mom of a teenager, I totally understand how braces could get it in the way of high school life. Especially, for those like my son who play sports.

But here's where I was impressed...they're removable! So there are no food restrictions. And the process of straightening teeth no longer gets in the way of sports. So teenagers who want to eat pizza? Go for it. Play football? Have fun! This is also great for hygiene  Because Invisalign is removable  regular teeth brushing and flossing can continue. Dr. Shipley explained that this leads to less staining and cavities that used to be caused by braces.

One of the aspects that surprised me the most is that rubber bands that are needed for alignment can still be used with Invisalign.

The cost of Invisalign is comparable to traditional braces and varies depending on the orthodontist. But what can be noted is that there are less orthodontist visits, less maintenance, either routine or emergency, and they can sometimes work even faster than traditional braces when straightening teeth.

I think one of the biggest advantages to using Invisalign is how much more comfortable they look. My little cousin recently finally got her metal braces off. But while she had them, every adjustment made her sore and she couldn't eat a lot of things that she liked. The discomfort from her metal braces wasn't just a one time occurrence  It came every time she had an adjustment, which seemed often. I love that Invisalign seems so much less painful. And who doesn't want to eat what they like?

These babies were served at the Invisalign event. Good thing my dentist wasn't invited!

Of course, I wrote brownies. What did you think I would write - my kids???

Learn more about how Invisalign works here. Dr. Shipley is located in Phoenix but if you'd like to locate an orthodontist who offers Invisalign in your area, click here.

After meeting with Dr. Shipley, I am convinced that Invisalign is what I would want for my children should they ever need braces in the future.

So what say you? Traditional braces or Invisalign?

DIY Sunburst Mirror

DIY Sunburst Mirror

I have loved sunburst mirrors since they first came on the scene a few years ago. Maybe it was longer than that. It doesn't really matter because I've always loved them.

So when I saw what looked to be an easy DIY Sunburst Mirror made out of magazines (yes, I said magazines), from Shoestring Pavilion, it had to be a sign that I must make one immediately.

It had to be a sign because I found this blog not on Pinterest, but by total accident. When I finally realized what I was looking at and that all I needed was a round mirror, foam board, magazines, hot glue, and paint, I pinned it immediately. It just so happened that I had a round mirror, which I loved, but it was always dwarfed by everything and any wall, no matter the size.

I also have a stack of old Lucky and Us magazines because I feel like I need to keep old magazines around. You just never know when someone is going to need to make a magazine collage. Because I'm twelve years old, I guess.

So, I embarked upon this project.

First, I have to explain that the foam board I purchased was sold in a pack of two at Walmart for $8. It was also rectangular instead of one big square like the original tutorial shows. We trimmed it to a square and traced the circle outline of the mirror. I didn't think it would be necessary to further trim the foam board into a circle. I was wrong but that comes later.

Then I started rolling.

I rolled on the carpet in my bedroom.

magazine

I rolled at the kitchen table.

I rolled and rolled and rolled some more.

It went on for hours. This part was the most time consuming task ever.

I also didn't manage to get the roll as tight as the original tutorial. Actually they all came out to be varying sizes, which I kinda dug.

Then I hot glued.

DIY

I hot glued like a mofo.

The first circle of reeds starts on the outside of the line. The original tutorial suggests starting in each quadrant but I got really impatient with that degree of organization and I just started gluing it around the circle.

DIY

I was finally done with the first circle.

DIY

Right around that time I realized I was out of reeds and had to make more because there is a second layer that is glued around the inner part of the circle. This layer works to add dimension and covers that foam board. But see how I should have followed directions and cut the board into more of a circle? You can totally see the square.

DIY

On went the second circle of reeds and then I tested it out to get an idea of what it would look like.

But then it was time to spray paint! You could leave it alone and it would look really interesting. I wouldn't mind that look if my walls were painted. But they're stark white with no immediate plans to paint any time soon so I wanted something that created a more bold statement.

In the tutorial the reeds are painted gold, which is awesome! And, might I add, the color of a true sunburst mirror. But I planned for black, especially because of the white wall. Our dining table set is also that dark blackish-brown espresso color so I thought black would be a good accent. I commenced to spray painting.

DIY

And I soon realize one can would not be enough. I mean, this thing is huge and has so much dimension and so many angles. It required two whole cans of spray paint.

After spraying everything as best I could, it was time to affix the mirror. The mirror is kind of heavy and the tutorial says to use hot glue. Hot glue can be fickle, as proven by the reeds that randomly popped off. I didn't trust it with the mirror. So we used a stronger adhesive over top that could only be used outside because the fumes would cause cancer or something. Swear it said that on the back of the tube.

Moving this thing was a challenge, too. Because the magazine reeds aren't terribly strong and hot glue can be unpredictable, they're easily crushed. Please note that the original tutorial used a higher quality magazine page so hers were probably stronger. But when transporting the thing inside and out, which we had to do like five times, we had to sort of create some over-under transporting action.

We also had to figure out hanging this giant thing. I didn't trust that all of the stress of the mirror's weight could be held by glue and foam board. And the mirror has perfectly good hooks already attached for hanging. So my husband ever so craftily took an exacto knife to the back of the board and cut a hole where the hooks were so all of the stress of hanging it wouldn't fall on the board, it would fall on the mirror.

And we finally hung it yesterday!

DIY

The original wall I had planned for this sunburst was not going to be enough after I realized the size of this thing. I'm not complaining. I like that it's a large piece but I had to choose a bigger wall to feature it. It's almost 45 inches across.

DIY

From this angle you can see the 3D effect of having two layers of reeds.

Also, with having it hung high up, you can't see all the imperfections!

DIY

I love it. I love how it turned out and I can't believe I did it! It was a true "upcycle" and it cost me a whopping $16 to create.

While it was more time consuming and tedious than I thought it would be and proves a little cumbersome to move, I'm very happy with how it came out and how it dresses up my little round mirror.

I would never have attempted this project were it not for an accidental clicking on Shoestring Pavilion.

Which reminds me of one of the reasons why I blog. That just so happens to be a Tuesday Topic and I'm linking up with Lauren and Tiffany to tell you about it.

I find cool ideas and blogs everywhere with things that I can actually do! I learn so much from blogging and I also like to tell everyone when I find something or complete some cool project. Not because I like to brag (not all the time), but because I want people to know how easy it is and if I can do it, so can you!

They made me Momma.

It's Mother's Day!

I became a mother almost fifteen years ago. I can't even believe I will have a fifteen year old.

But here it is...the first picture of me as a Momma, circa 1998.

Isaac Gabriel initiated me into motherhood. He is my first and I didn't realize he was only just the beginning of what would prepare me for later. I was driven because of him. He was such a chill kid. He wasn't the kid that gets into everything, screams in the store, throws tantrums. He was always laid back and down for anything. He was the easiest little boy. I would pay for that later with Lola.

 photo SANY0475.jpg

Christian Andres was 9 pounds at 39 weeks. When this picture was taken I didn't like it. I thought I looked fat and I had no makeup on. Christian was probably only a few days old here. But now? That's one of my favorite pictures. Big boobs, double chin, no makeup. But it's just me and just him. I love it.

Christian has shown me what it is to love a child so much it literally hurts. He has been my greatest teacher showing me a side of motherhood I was blind to before him.

And then there's "little" Lola. "Little" Lola Magdalene has a giant personality. She is crazy, loud sunlight. She brought joy to us when we needed it most. And I don't have a single picture of me holding her in her first days. Chalk it up to me not having a smart phone at the time so I couldn't take a hundred mommy-baby selfies added with having a toddler with severe special needs and a teenager.

Anywho, remember me mentioning Gabe being so easy and relaxed? Lola makes up for all that. She is constant energy, exploration, loud noises, and she's so cute I can't even stand it most days.

These descriptions are merely snippets of all they really are. But they made me. They're the best thing I've ever done and the best thing I will ever do.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

A Cupcake Bouquet: I get it from my Momma!

A Cupcake Bouquet:

I Get It From My Momma

Mother's Day is tomorrow and I'm prepping. That involves baking and sweet stuff.

I love Mother's Day and I'm looking forward sleeping in. Especially because my youngest has been waking up super early. I checked the clock on Wednesday when she woke up and it read 5:57 in the morning. And then Thursday was even earlier. I'm not even kidding. I've already secured Dad. Sleeping in is happening tomorrow.

Back to tonight's happenings...I baked. While baking strawberry cupcakes I was thinking to myself about the women in my life, the mothers that came before me, and the mothers that mothered me.

I get almost all my creativity from my mom. She was a really great "kid" mom, always finding creative things for us to do - working with clay, painting, camping, exploring outside, hiking. We almost always gave gifts to friends and relatives that were homemade. That's probably where I get my do it yourself spirit. She gardens. At every house she has lived in since I was little she has grown amazing gardens. I don't garden. I bake.

I have two aunts that live near me that have been in my life enough to rub off on me a little. I have an Aunt Candy. No joke. But only her nieces and nephews call her that. Everyone else calls her by her full name. I won't hear of it. She bakes and creates amazing desserts. Maybe that's where I get my love of baking from.

My Aunt Wendy is more like a sister or a cousin than an aunt. We were neighbors for years, we watch Dancing With the Stars together, we've gone on vacation together, we're pretty tight. And she's stronger for many reasons I won't mention here. But, trust me, she's a tough chick.

My Gramma has been in my life since I was little. She used to bring over apple soda and let us eat chocolate chip cookie dough when my mom was a health nut. She is there when anybody needs anything, plain and simple. And she adores my kids. Adores them.

It was just my sister and I growing up. She doesn't live near me but we talk on the phone a lot, mostly about the Housewives. We've both entered motherhood early in life and we both have three kids each. I love my seester. I would trip a girl on the bus for her. (That actually happened.)

So the point to this post is I'm just celebrating where I come from this Mother's Day. Acknowledge where you come from and the mothers that made you.

And if you're a man and you're reading this and you have a mother - yours or your children's - don't be a douche. Do something for her. Acknowledge her and all that she does. Let her sleep in. Clean the house. Buy her flowers. Women like that. Even when they pretend they don't.

And in the spirit of baking and creativity...

I saw an example of this on my friend's facebook. I couldn't find the original source since it was facebook and it's been shared thousands of times. But it looked easy enough for me to attempt to do it myself!

I made half a batch of mini cupcakes and half a batch of regular cupcakes. I used floral foam but Styrofoam works, too. Then I just used toothpicks to make the cupcakes stay put. Strawberry cupcake with white frosting. It's for my mom so don't tell her about it!

It's okay. I'm pretty sure she doesn't read this blog. The secret is safe.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!
